Graduate Certificate in GIS
The Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provides advanced, health focused training in spatial analysis and data visualization. The program prepares learners to apply GIS methods to public health research, practice, and policy by developing strong analytic, technical, and conceptual competencies. It is well suited for professionals seeking to expand their expertise in geospatial approaches to decision-making and problem-solving.
The curriculum integrates foundational epidemiology and biostatistics with applied geospatial techniques. Learners engage in spatial data collection, geographic data management, visualization, and remote sensing while building proficiency with industry standard GIS software. Through this applied training, participants learn to analyze spatial patterns, interpret complex geospatial datasets, and translate findings into actionable insights for public health contexts.
This 15 semester credit hour certificate includes five 3-SCH courses, delivered fully online in accelerated 8-week terms. The structure enables working professionals to strengthen their public health and GIS skillsets with maximum flexibility.
Upon completion, learners will be able to demonstrate the following essential public health competencies:
- Understand geographic information science principles in the context of public health
- Demonstrate knowledge of methods of the geospatial analysis of public health information
- Apply appropriate geospatial methods to public health research, practice, and policy
- Use GIS software and geodatabase design to access, manage, and analyze spatial health data
