Janell Briscoe, DHA
Instructor, Health Administration & Health Policy
Education & Experience:
I hold a Doctorate in Healthcare Administration (DHA) from Oklahoma State University,
a Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) from Washington University in St. Louis,
and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Texas A&M University.
Prior to entering academia, I spent more than 30 years in the healthcare industry, serving in executive leadership roles across multiple care settings including acute care hospitals, physician practice operations, and post-acute rehabilitation hospitals within for-profit, nonprofit, and academic health systems.
Leading organizations through periods of significant industry transformation allowed me to develop expertise in healthcare finance, insurance reimbursement, and alternative payment models beginning in the early 1990s. Rapid advancements in healthcare technology also required me to lead several large-scale electronic health record implementations and revenue cycle transformations involving Cerner, Athenahealth, and Epic platforms.
As the Dallas–Fort Worth region experienced substantial population growth, I directed numerous facility expansion initiatives and partnered with physician leaders to grow provider networks that addressed the healthcare needs of one of the nation’s fastest-growing metropolitan areas.
I retired from healthcare operations in 2021 after serving five years as Chief Executive Officer of Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospitals of Fort Worth and City View. Prior to joining Encompass Health, I held leadership positions with Cook Children's, Children's Health, Tenet Healthcare, and Baylor Health Care System.
Teaching, Advocacy & Research Interests:
Throughout my administrative career, I focused on building strong partnerships between
clinicians and healthcare systems. I am passionate about developing emerging leaders
who are committed to improving communication and collaboration among key healthcare
stakeholders, including patients, clinicians, insurers, and government agencies. I
believe these partnerships are essential to achieving the best possible use of resources
while consistently improving community health outcomes.
I believe healthcare leaders should serve as catalysts for positive change. Effective leaders must understand healthcare financing and payment systems while actively engaging in health policy research and development. The thoughtful management of financial, physical, and human resources in support of public health is both a significant responsibility and a meaningful career path. I look forward to mentoring UNT Health students who are committed to advancing innovation and positive change in healthcare.
Professional Activities & Awards:
I am an active member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and have previously served on committees for the Children's Hospital Association and the Medical Group Management Association. I also have extensive experience with hospital accreditation through The Joint Commission, as well as medical staff relations and healthcare governing board leadership.
