About Us
Who We Are
The Technology Transfer Office (OTT) is responsible for helping move new technologies and discoveries from the university to outside organizations and public use via licensing in order to develop and market products based on UNT Health Research.
This office manages projects that span a wide array of life science activities. This is achieved by accepting technology disclosures from faculty, staff and students. When a disclosure shows potential for commercial success, we seek intellectual property protections (i.e. patents) for the research. We then seek commercial parts and negotiate a license and option agreements for continued development. If a technology is commercialized successfully, the revenues are distributed in accordance to 08.103 Intellectual Property Policy.
This office is also the contact point for outside organizations and individuals who want access for commercial access to the skills, inventions, creative works and discoveries of the UNT Health community.
Why We Do It
In 1980, the U.S. Congress passed the Boyh-Dole Act, which mandates that any inventions arising from federally sponsored research at a university shall be assigned to the university. In return, the university would ensure to its best extent that the invention is commercialized for the benefit of the public.
UNT Health formalized its commitment to this objective by establishing the present Technology Transfer Office, reporting to both the Vice President for Research and the Office of Graduate Studies.
This is achieved by assisting the University's faculty, staff and students in their working relationships with business and industry, in all areas of the university research endeavor, and for the purpose of furthering successful commercial applications. The OTT, a unit of the Health Research and Innovation Center (HRIC), is the primary organizational structure for the transfer of university technology, innovations and knowledge, working to facilitate the transfer of such resources to the commercial, academic and public sectors.
