F-1 Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
- You must be an F-1 student for at least one full academic year (exceptions apply for required graduate internships).
- The training must be an essential part of your curriculum.
- You must maintain valid F-1 status.
- CPT must be authorized by the Designated School Official (DSO) and documented on your Form I-20.
Types of CPT
More than 20 hours per week, typically during summer or vacation periods. Full- Time CPT must be approved by academic program, prior to applying.
Up to 20 hours per week, usually during the academic year.
How to Apply for CPT
Confirm with your academic advisor that the internship is part of your degree program.
Register for the CPT-related course.
Obtain a job offer letter or Student Practice Experience Placement Confirmation form (for MPH students). The letter must include the number of hours, location, and start and end dates.
Submit the CPT application through the iNorthTx Portal.

Obtain a new Form I-20 with CPT authorization. Carefully review the authorized CPT dates and ensure you do not work outside of those dates.
Begin work ONLY after receiving CPT authorization.
Important Considerations
- CPT is granted on a semester-by-semester basis, depending on academic need.
- Authorization is limited to specific start/end dates and employers.
- DO NOT work outside of the authorized dates.
- Unauthorized work can jeopardize your F-1 status.
- 12 months or more of full-time CPT may affect your eligibility for Optional Practical Training (OPT).
- Maintain communication with your DSO and adhere to university policies.
